Singita Kwitonda Lodge

Lodge overview

Singita Kwitonda Lodge

Built to Be Reclaimed by the Forest

Eleven Stone-and-Grass Suites · A Private Plunge Pool in Every Room · Views of Sabyinyo, Gahinga and Muhabura

Volcanoes National Park · Northern Rwanda · Gorilla Trekking

Overview of Singita Kwitonda Lodge

Most lodges want to look finished. Kwitonda wants the forest to take it back.

Set right on the edge of Volcanoes National Park, the lodge is built from volcanic rock, river stone, handmade ceramic tiles and oven-red clay bricks made by neighbouring communities. Its grass-roofed, stone-walled suites sit low among bamboo, ferns and giant lobelias, and the plan is that, over the years, the vegetation will creep in and soften every wall. Moss already clings to the stone. Buffalo graze the open grass. Beyond it all, the three great volcanoes of Sabyinyo, Gahinga and Muhabura hold up the sky.

The lodge opened in 2019 and takes its name from Kwitonda, a legendary silverback whose story is still told in Rwanda for his humility and gentleness. It is a fitting name for a place that speaks quietly: nothing here shouts, and everything is considered. This is Singita, the safari brand known for turning conservation into an art form, and Kwitonda is its first home in Rwanda.

"Some lodges give you a view of the forest. Kwitonda gives you a seat inside it."

11 Stone-and-Grass Suites

1 Heated Plunge Pool in Every Suite

3 Volcanoes in View

1 hour With a Wild Mountain Gorilla Family

For travellers planning a luxury Rwanda gorilla safari, Kwitonda is the quiet, deeply comfortable choice: a lodge for those who like their luxury warm, textured and rooted in its place, and who want to spend the evening after a gorilla trek in a deep bath beside a fire.

Lodge Overview

Singita Kwitonda Lodge at a Glance

<colgroup><col style="min-width: 25px;"><col style="min-width: 25px;"></colgroup>

Property

Singita Kwitonda Lodge

Location

Edge of Volcanoes National Park, Kinigi, near Musanze, northern Rwanda

Setting

Open grassland and bamboo forest, facing the Sabyinyo, Gahinga and Muhabura volcanoes

Accommodation style

Luxury mountain lodge of grass-roofed, stone-walled suites

Room categories

9 one-bedroom suites (sleeping two) and 2 two-bedroom suites (sleeping up to four)

Exclusive use

Kataza House, a private four-bedroom villa sleeping eight, set beside the lodge

Meal plan

Fully inclusive: all meals and beverages, including premium wines, spirits and liqueurs

Signature features

Private heated plunge pools, indoor and outdoor showers, suite fireplaces, conservation lounge, Akarabo Nursery, wine cellar

Gorilla access

A short drive from the park headquarters, where treks begin

Getting there

A 30-minute helicopter flight from Kigali, or a road transfer of up to four hours

Children

Welcome at any age, with childminders; golden monkey treks from 12, gorilla treks from 15

Recommended stay

Three to four nights

Best suited for

Honeymooners, couples, families, multigenerational groups and conservation-minded guests

Singita Kwitonda Lodge is operated by Singita and is not owned by Savannah Explore Africa. We include the lodge in tailor-made Rwanda and East Africa safaris.

A Lodge the Forest Is Meant to Keep

Volcanoes National Park protects the Rwandan share of the Virunga Massif, a chain of volcanoes that straddles Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is home to more than a third of the world's remaining mountain gorillas, as well as the golden monkeys that live in its bamboo forests.

Kwitonda sits on a protected stretch of land on the park's edge, about 72 hectares in all. By placing the lodge here, Singita helps to create a natural buffer between the farmland and the gorilla habitat, and the land around the buildings is being restored with native trees. Forest elephants occasionally wander down from the slopes, drawn, the lodge likes to say, by the same peace that guests feel.

The lodge was designed with GAPP Architects in collaboration with Cécile & Boyd and Hesse Kleinloog (HK) Studio, and it shows. Small buildings follow the natural contours of the ground, tucked into the hillside rather than stacked above it.

The climate is cool and often misty. Mornings and nights are chilly, the days can be bright, and rain arrives without warning, turning the light soft and the forest vivid. It is the kind of weather that makes a fire feel like a gift.

Arriving at the Lodge

Most guests fly into Kigali and reach Kwitonda in one of two ways. The quickest is a helicopter flight of about 30 minutes across the country's hills, an arrival that is a story in itself. The alternative is a road transfer across the green, folded landscape that gives Rwanda its name, the Land of a Thousand Hills. It can take up to four hours, with only one public rest stop along the way, so motion sickness tablets are worth packing.

Because international flights often land very early or very late, a night in Kigali before heading north is usually wise. Check-in at the lodge is at 1 p.m. and check-out is at 11 a.m. Singita advises against planning a gorilla trek, golden monkey trek or volcano hike on your day of departure, so a final night in hand gives you a calmer last day.

A driver-guide and vehicle are arranged for every day of your stay, handling both the park experiences and your transfers to and from Kigali. We organise this for you as part of your private itinerary, so the logistics stay out of sight.

Guests cannot arrive or depart on Christmas Day or New Year's Day, so festive stays need to be planned with those dates in mind.

Inside the Suites

The suites are organic, cabin-like and deeply private. Walls of volcanic rock and river stone hold the warmth, wide windows frame the green landscape, and cosy verandas offer a place to sit and watch the weather change.

One-Bedroom Suites

Nine suites are designed for couples. Each has a bedroom, a lounge, a veranda, a dressing room, a minibar, indoor and outdoor showers, a fireplace and a heated private plunge pool. There is also space for in-room wellness treatments, so a massage can come to you at the end of a long trek day.

Two-Bedroom Suites

Two larger suites sleep up to four, with two identical bedrooms around a more spacious lounge. The main suite has indoor and outdoor fireplaces, a veranda and a heated plunge pool, and both bedrooms have indoor and outdoor showers and dressing rooms. They suit families, friends travelling together and multigenerational groups.

Kataza House

For those who want complete privacy, Kataza House is an exclusive-use four-bedroom villa, sleeping up to eight, set alongside the lodge. Guests there enjoy full access to the lodge's facilities, dining and experiences.

Whichever suite you choose, the small things are taken care of: the fire already burning, the deep bath already drawn, and someone always close by to anticipate what you might need.

Life at the Lodge

At the heart of Kwitonda is a main lodge with wide windows, a lounge overlooking the pool, and an open kitchen that offers a glimpse into local cooking traditions. With only eleven suites, service is attentive and personal.

Dining

Meals are built around the lodge's farm-to-table garden at Akarabo Nursery, where much of the produce is grown, and guests can wander the beds and learn where their food comes from. The rate includes all meals and all beverages, including premium wines, spirits and liqueurs, and a wine cellar offers tastings for those who want to explore further.

Rest and Restoration

Wellness treatments are offered in the privacy of your suite, and the lodge also arranges yoga for guests who want to stretch out tired legs after a trek. Each suite's heated plunge pool is a treatment in itself on a cold evening.

Evenings

As the light fades over the volcanoes, guests gather around an outdoor fire pit or in the lodge's fireside lounge. Dinner follows, and conversation tends to drift back to the same question: how close were the gorillas, and how far did you climb to reach them?

Amenities and Services

Kwitonda's luxury lies in privacy, warmth and thoughtful detail. Most of what you need is included in the rate.

In Your Suite

Private heated plunge pool

Indoor and outdoor showers

Fireplace

Lounge and veranda

Dressing room and minibar

Space for in-room wellness treatments

Binoculars, hairdryer and complimentary Wi-Fi

At the Lodge

Main lodge with lounge, dining room and open kitchen

Conservation lounge

Wine cellar and tastings

Outdoor fire pit

Akarabo Nursery and farm-to-table garden

Singita Boutique & Gallery

Gear room for gorilla and golden monkey treks

Covered golf carts with waterproof blinds to carry you to your suite in the rain

Included Services

All meals and beverages, including premium wines, spirits and liqueurs

Laundry

Wi-Fi

Use of the gear room, with gaiters, waterproof jackets, rain covers and trekking poles

Backpacks stocked with a lunchbox, snacks and a water bottle

Moments to Request

A small lodge makes memorable moments easy to arrange. We work with the Kwitonda team to plan the ones that matter to you.

Plant a Tree at Akarabo Help restore the forest by planting native trees at the lodge's nursery, a living memory of your journey.

Meet the Craftspeople Sit with local artisans at the nursery to learn the traditions that shape this place, or try your hand at pottery.

A Wine Experience A tasting in the lodge's cellar and bar, ideal for an evening off the trail.

Honeymoons and Celebrations Anniversaries, birthdays and honeymoons deserve more than a cake. Tell us the occasion, and we will plan the details with the lodge so the surprise lands just as you imagine.

Special moments are arranged on request and are subject to the lodge's confirmation and availability.

A Day with the Mountain Gorillas

For most guests, the reason for coming to Kwitonda is a single hour in the presence of a wild mountain gorilla family. Here is how that day usually unfolds.

Gorilla Trekking Day From Kwitonda

Early Morning Breakfast and a final gear check. Your lodge team packs lunch and sets you up with gaiters, a rain jacket and a walking pole from the gear room.

Briefing A short drive takes you to the park headquarters, where Rwanda Development Board guides brief each group of up to eight trekkers on the gorilla family you will visit and how to behave in its presence. Trackers are already in the forest, following the family's trail.

The Forest From farmland into the trees. The walk begins across fields and moves into the high-altitude forest. Treks can last from a couple of hours to most of the day, depending on where the gorillas have moved. Porters are available and strongly recommended, for the help on the slopes and for the livelihood they provide to local families.

The Hour The encounter. Then they are there: a silverback feeding in the undergrowth, mothers with infants clinging to their backs, juveniles tumbling through the bamboo. You are allowed one hour with the family. It passes in what feels like minutes.

Afternoon Back to Kwitonda. A hot shower, a late lunch, an in-suite massage and a long soak in your private plunge pool bring the day gently to a close.

Gorilla permits are limited and must be booked well in advance for your dates. Staying at Kwitonda does not secure one automatically. Rwanda currently charges US$1,500 per person per permit. The minimum age for gorilla trekking is 15 years.

Trekking at Your Own Pace

It is worth being honest: a gorilla trek in Volcanoes National Park is a proper day in the mountains. The terrain is hilly and often muddy, and the altitude, which climbs to roughly 2,600 metres in the park, can be tiring. People of many ages complete the trek, but regular walking in the months before you travel, especially uphill, makes the day far more enjoyable.

On the morning of your trek, your guide will talk through your fitness and preferences with the rangers, who allocate the gorilla families. A porter, a walking stick and an unhurried pace make a real difference. Because trek conditions and permit costs vary, we usually suggest two treks on a three- or four-night stay.

Beyond the Gorillas

Kwitonda rewards a longer stay. The forest, the farms and the volcanoes offer plenty more than a single trek.

Golden Monkey Trekking Golden monkeys, found only in the Virunga volcanoes, are famously lively and live in bamboo forest. A trek to see them is gentler than a gorilla trek and a delight for photographers.

Hiking and Walking Guided hikes in the park, including treks toward the volcanoes and to the gravesite of Dian Fossey, offer another side of the Virungas. At the lodge, walking and running trails and cycling routes let you explore on your own terms.

The Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund A visit to the Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund offers a deeper look at the research and conservation behind the gorillas' recovery.

Community and Culture Visit local communities, try the Singita Community Culinary School, and learn how conservation and local livelihoods are tied together.

Birdwatching and Kigali The forest edge is rich in birdlife, and a day trip to Kigali offers a look at Rwanda's remarkably clean and calm capital.

Conservation and Community

Kwitonda was built to prove that luxury and conservation can strengthen each other. By occupying land on the park's edge, the lodge helps to create a natural buffer between agricultural land and gorilla habitat, and the grounds are being restored with native trees.

Conservation Restoring native forest at the park boundary and supporting the long-term protection of mountain gorillas

Community Built with bricks and craftsmanship from surrounding communities, with a culinary school and craft experiences that benefit local people

Tourism Permits, porters and lodge jobs give families a direct reason to protect the forest

Singita works with The Long Run, a sustainability partner focused on conservation, community, culture and commerce, and the lodge's conservation lounge tells the story of the land, from Dian Fossey's work to the geology that created the volcanoes.

Why Discerning Travellers Choose Kwitonda

Rwanda has several excellent places to stay near Volcanoes National Park. Kwitonda stands apart for three reasons.

The first is its position. The lodge sits on the park's boundary, with the volcanoes in view from every suite, and the trailheads a short drive away.

The second is its comfort. A private heated plunge pool, indoor and outdoor showers and a fireplace in every suite make it one of the most soothing places in East Africa to return to after a hard day on the mountain.

The third is its philosophy. Kwitonda is built to be reclaimed by the forest, and everything about it, from the community-made bricks to the nursery garden, reflects a belief that the best luxury is rooted in place.

When to Go

Gorillas can be trekked all year round, and Kwitonda is open in every season. Rwanda sits just south of the equator, so temperatures stay fairly steady; what changes is the rain.

The long dry season runs from June to mid-September, with a shorter dry spell from December to February. Trails are firmer, though never truly dry in a rainforest. These are the lodge's peak months, so suites and permits should be booked well ahead.

The long rains fall from March to May, with a shorter rainy season in October and November. The forest is at its most lush, and these are the lodge's off-peak months, with noticeably lower rates. Whatever the month, waterproof layers and sturdy boots are essential.

How Long to Stay

We recommend three nights as a minimum at Kwitonda. That allows time to arrive, trek and recover without rushing.

Four nights is ideal if you would like two gorilla treks, a golden monkey trek, a day at the nursery and a slow morning in your plunge pool. For honeymooners and travellers on a luxury safari, three to four nights strikes the right balance.

Rates and What Is Included

Kwitonda publishes its rates in US dollars, per adult per night sharing, with a peak and an off-peak season.

<colgroup><col style="min-width: 25px;"><col style="min-width: 25px;"><col style="min-width: 25px;"></colgroup>

US$ per person per night

2026

2027

Peak season: 1 June – 31 October, and 15 December – 5 January

3,630

3,780

Off-peak season: 6 January – 31 May, and 1 November – 14 December

2,720

2,830

Children pay half the adult rate. The two-bedroom suite is priced per suite per night, from US$10,880 off-peak to US$14,520 at peak in 2026, for one to four guests. Rates include 18% VAT and are subject to change; please confirm in writing for your dates.

The rate includes your suite, all meals and beverages (including premium wines, spirits and liqueurs), laundry and Wi-Fi.

Not Included in the Lodge Rate

Gorilla permits, currently US$1,500 per person

Golden monkey treks and other park experiences

Singita Conservation & Community Partnership Levy, carbon offset levy and tourism levy

Wellness treatments

Driver-guide and vehicle for every day of your stay

Transfers to and from Kigali, including helicopter flights

Purchases from the Singita Boutique & Gallery

What a Stay Really Costs

At this level, it is better to see the full picture at the start. Three nights in a one-bedroom suite in the 2026 off-peak season (until 14 December), with one gorilla permit, comes to roughly US$9,660 per person sharing: US$8,160 for the lodge and US$1,500 for the permit. The same stay in the 2027 peak season is around US$12,840 per person. Add US$1,500 per person for a second gorilla trek.

A family of four sharing a two-bedroom suite for three nights in the 2026 off-peak season pays US$32,640 for the lodge, about US$8,160 per person, before permits.

Levies, the daily driver-guide and vehicle, transfers, wellness treatments and any extra activities are added on top. Every Savannah Explore Africa quotation sets these out line by line, so you can see exactly where your investment goes before you confirm.

These figures are based on the lodge's published rate sheet and current permit prices and are offered as a planning guide rather than a confirmed quotation. Final prices should always be checked for your specific dates.

Combining Kwitonda with Your Safari

Kwitonda sits naturally within a longer journey through Rwanda and Uganda.

Kigali A day exploring Rwanda's calm, clean capital, including its powerful memorial and lively craft and coffee scene.

Akagera National Park Savannah, lakes and the Big Five in Rwanda's eastern park, a perfect contrast to the volcanoes.

Nyungwe Forest Chimpanzee tracking and canopy walks in one of Africa's oldest montane rainforests.

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, Uganda Cross the border at Cyanika and compare Rwanda's gorillas with Uganda's, perhaps staying at Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge for a different kind of forest evening.

Why Book Singita Kwitonda Lodge with Savannah Explore Africa?

Savannah Explore Africa designs private safari itineraries around each traveller's interests, travel dates, comfort preferences and budget.

When we incorporate Kwitonda into a Rwanda safari, we coordinate the suite with gorilla permits, transfers, guiding and additional experiences to create a practical, well-organised and unhurried journey.

Plan Your Stay at Kwitonda

A fire already burning, a deep bath already drawn, a morning with the gorillas still to come. We design every Rwanda safari privately, from permits and suites to flights and the special touches that make a journey unforgettable.
