Virunga Lodge

Lodge overview

Virunga Lodge, Rwanda
Gorilla Lodge

There are lodges you stay at, and there are lodges you remember. Virunga Lodge belongs firmly to the second kind.

Perched on a high ridge in northern Rwanda, it looks west across the Musanze Valley to the great chain of the Virunga Volcanoes, and east over the shimmering twin lakes of Burera and Ruhondo. Many seasoned safari travellers describe it as one of the finest views in Africa, and few who have watched the sun rise over those lakes would argue.

The lodge was built in 2004 by Praveen Moman, founder of Volcanoes Safaris. It was Rwanda's original luxury gorilla lodge, and its hand-crafted, Afro-chic style went on to shape what a premium safari lodge in Rwanda could look and feel like. More than twenty years later, it remains independently owned and operated by Volcanoes Safaris and is still regarded as one of the most loved lodges on the continent.

"The gorillas are the reason you come to northern Rwanda. Virunga Lodge is the reason you remember how it felt."

<colgroup><col style="min-width: 25px;"><col style="min-width: 25px;"><col style="min-width: 25px;"><col style="min-width: 25px;"></colgroup>

2004

Year Virunga Lodge Opened

10

Bandas 4 Deluxe, 6 Standard

2,200m

Altitude Above the Twin Lakes

1 hr

To Volcanoes NP Headquarters at Kinigi

What makes Virunga Lodge special is not one grand feature but the way everything fits together. With only ten guest bandas, the atmosphere is intimate and the staff come to know each guest by name. Each banda has its own fireplace and private terrace. Every guest is looked after by a personal butler. Meals, drinks, laundry and massages are part of the stay rather than extras on a bill. And just an hour away, in the bamboo and forest of Volcanoes National Park, live the mountain gorillas that bring most visitors here.

For travellers planning a luxury Rwanda safari, Virunga Lodge offers far more than a convenient bed before a trek. It is a place to slow down, take in the highland scenery and understand the conservation story that has helped bring the mountain gorilla back from the brink.

A Ridge Above the Lakes

Virunga Lodge stands at roughly 2,200 metres above sea level in Burera District, on a narrow ridge that falls away to water on one side and farmland on the other. Below, the lakes of Burera and Ruhondo spread out between steep green hills, their shores lined with terraced fields and small villages. Beyond the valley rise the volcanoes themselves Muhabura, Gahinga, Sabyinyo, Bisoke and Karisimbi their summits often wrapped in cloud until the morning sun burns it away.

The altitude shapes daily life at the lodge. Mornings are crisp and clear, afternoons are mild, and evenings turn cool enough that the fire in your banda feels like a welcome rather than a decoration. Mist often drifts up from the lakes at dawn, and on clear evenings the light over the water turns gold, then rose, then deep blue.

Arriving at the Lodge

Most guests arrive from Kigali, Rwanda's capital and main international gateway. The road journey takes around three hours, winding north through Rwanda's famous "land of a thousand hills", past banana groves, roadside markets and the busy town of Musanze, before climbing the final steep track up to the ridge. Many travellers find the drive itself a fine introduction to the country.

For those short on time, or simply wanting a memorable start, a helicopter charter from Kigali takes about twenty minutes, subject to availability and weather. It is less a transfer than an arrival: the hills fold away beneath you, the twin lakes appear, and the volcanoes rise ahead before you settle onto the ridge. It is a popular choice for honeymooners and shorter stays.

However you travel with Savannah Explore Africa , the journey is handled for you from the moment you land. We arrange a personal meet-and-assist welcome at Kigali International Airport, a private vehicle and experienced driver-guide who stays with you throughout your time in Rwanda, and timings built around your flights and your trek, so the only thing you need to think about is the view.

Guests arriving on long-haul flights , we usually best advise them to spend their first night in Kigali or reach the lodge by afternoon, leaving a full night's rest before trekking. The park headquarters at Kinigi is about an hour's drive from the lodge, so trekking mornings start early.

Inside the Bandas

The lodge's ten guest bandas are scattered along the ridge, each one built by hand from local volcanic stone and joined to the main lodge by winding stone paths through planted gardens. Every banda faces either the volcanoes or the lakes, and every one has its own private terrace, so the view is never something you have to share.

Inside, the design draws deeply on Rwandan craft. Woven baskets and textiles, natural timber, warm earth tones and handmade furniture create rooms that feel rooted in their surroundings rather than imported from elsewhere. Large windows bring the landscape indoors, and the fireplace becomes the heart of the room once the evening chill sets in. Bathrooms are en-suite, with hot water heated by the sun part of the lodge's long-standing commitment to solar energy and low-impact tourism.

<colgroup><col style="width: 340px;"><col style="min-width: 25px;"></colgroup>

Standard Bandas

Deluxe Bandas

Six of the bandas fall into the Standard category. They offer the complete Virunga Lodge experience the same terraces and views, the same fireplaces, the same personal butler and the same all-inclusive hospitality in a slightly more compact space. For travellers who plan to spend their days trekking and their evenings in the main lodge, a Standard Banda is all they need.

The four Deluxe Bandas are true suites. Alongside the bedroom, each has its own private sitting room with a fireplace a separate space to read, rest or enjoy a quiet drink before dinner. Their organic design echoes traditional local building styles in soft natural colours. They are the natural choice for honeymoons, anniversaries and longer stays.

Whichever banda you choose, the same small touches define the stay: a fire lit for your return, a bed turned down while you dine, and a terrace where the only sound in the morning is birdsong drifting up from the valley. Specific room configurations and bed arrangements should be confirmed for your travel dates.

Life at the Lodge

Hospitality at Virunga Lodge is warm, unhurried and quietly attentive. From the moment you arrive, you are looked after by a personal butler who becomes your point of contact for everything: early wake-up calls and coffee before a trek, packed lunches for the trail, a reservation for a massage, or simply knowing how you like your evening drink. It is the kind of service that anticipates rather than waits to be asked.

Dining with a View

Meals are one of the quiet pleasures of a stay here. The kitchen works with fresh, locally sourced produce, much of it grown in the fertile volcanic soils of the surrounding hills, and blends Rwandan flavours with international dishes. Breakfast is served early on trekking days. Lunch can be enjoyed at the lodge on rest days or packed for the forest. Dinner is the highlight, served in the main lodge as the light fades over the valley, with candles, conversation and the glow of the fire.

The lodge's rates are fully inclusive of drinks. Soft drinks, standard and premium spirits, signature cocktails and a selection of wines and whiskies are all part of the stay, so there is no bar tab to keep track of. French champagne is the one notable exclusion.

Rest and Restoration

Gorilla trekking can be demanding, and the lodge is designed to help you recover. Massage treatments are included in the rate, subject to booking and availability, and are especially welcome after a long day on muddy slopes. Laundry is complimentary too, so boots and trekking clothes caked in forest mud can be cleaned and returned ready for the next outing. Wi-Fi is available in the main lodge and the bandas, though many guests find the view a better use of their time.

Evenings by the Fire

As night falls, guests gather around the fireplace in the main lodge to share stories from the day's trek. Many drift into the Dian Fossey Map Room, a small library of maps, books and photographs that trace the exploration of the Virunga region and the long fight to protect its gorillas. It is a fitting place to reflect on the encounter you have just had, or to prepare for the one still to come.

On the evening before a trek, guests can join a fireside conversation in the Map Room with a member of one of the lodge's conservation partners a veterinarian from Gorilla Doctors, who have worked alongside Volcanoes Safaris since 1997, or a researcher from the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund. Hearing how individual gorillas are monitored and treated, from the people who do it, gives the next morning's encounter a depth few visitors ever experience. This is access that cannot be bought on the day; we arrange it as part of your booking.

Amenities and Services

Virunga Lodge is a highland retreat rather than a resort, and its amenities reflect that. Volcanoes Safaris can also arrange exclusive use of a gorilla group, so your trek is shared only with the people you came with.

Exclusive use suits milestone birthdays, family reunions, intimate weddings and private corporate retreats. The lodge becomes a private home on the ridge, with menus, timings and activities shaped entirely around your group. Exclusive-use rates are quoted on request, and dates should be secured well in advance, particularly in high season.

A Day with the Mountain Gorillas

For most guests, the reason for coming to Virunga Lodge is a single, extraordinary hour: time spent in the presence of a wild mountain gorilla family. Here is how that day usually unfolds.

<colgroup><col style="min-width: 25px;"></colgroup>

Gorilla Trekking Day From Virunga Lodge

Before Dawn

Coffee, breakfast and the drive to Kinigi Your butler brings coffee or tea to the banda and breakfast is served while it is still dark or just turning light. Boots, gaiters, rain jacket and gloves are laid out, and a packed lunch and water are ready. Your driver-guide then sets off for the hour-long drive to Kinigi, often with the volcanoes emerging from the mist as you go.

Briefing

Welcome at the park headquarters Trekkers gather at the Volcanoes National Park headquarters, often to traditional music and dance. Rwanda Development Board rangers assign each small group to a habituated gorilla family and explain how to behave around the gorillas: keeping a respectful distance, speaking softly and following the guide's lead at all times.

The Forest

Into bamboo and hagenia woodland The walk begins through farmland to the stone wall that marks the park boundary. Beyond it lies a world of bamboo, nettles, hagenia trees and moss-draped forest. Trackers locate the family early in the morning and stay in radio contact with your guide. The trek can last from under an hour to most of the day, depending on where the gorillas have moved, the terrain and the weather. Local porters can be hired at the trailhead to carry your daypack and steady you on slippery slopes and the fee supports families living around the park.

The Hour

The encounter When the trackers signal that the family is close, bags and walking sticks are left behind and the group moves forward quietly. Then, often suddenly, they are there: a silverback resting against a tree, mothers grooming their young, juveniles tumbling through the undergrowth. Visitors spend up to one hour with the family. It passes remarkably quickly, and very few people ever forget it.

Afternoon

Back to the lodge After the walk out and the presentation of trekking certificates, you return to Virunga Lodge. The afternoon is yours: a long shower, a massage, a late lunch on your terrace or a nap in front of the fire. By evening, the day's stories are shared over dinner and the encounter begins to settle into memory.

Gorilla permits are limited each day and should be secured well in advance, especially between June and September and over the December holidays. The minimum age for gorilla trekking is 15 years.

Trekking at Your Own Pace

A gorilla trek is a genuine walk in the mountains, at altitude and often on steep, muddy ground. Plenty of gorilla trekkers are seasoned travellers in their sixties and seventies, and with a little preparation most complete the trek comfortably. Regular walking in the months before you travel, especially uphill, makes the day far more enjoyable.

On the morning of the trek, your guide will speak with the park rangers about your fitness and preferences. Rangers decide which family each group visits, but they take these conversations seriously, and guests who would prefer a shorter walk are often assigned a family closer to the park edge. A porter at your side, a walking stick and an unhurried pace make a great difference.

For guests with limited mobility, Volcanoes National Park can arrange for trained porters to carry visitors to and from the gorillas in a specially designed carrying chair, for an additional fee of around US$200 per trek. Availability is limited, so please tell us at the time of booking and we will make the arrangements.

Beyond the Gorillas

While gorillas are the headline, the Virunga region rewards those who stay a little longer. Each of these experiences adds a different layer to a stay at the lodge.

Golden Monkey Tracking

The golden monkey is one of Africa's most striking primates, with a bright orange-gold back and a playful, restless energy. Endangered and found only in the Albertine Rift, it lives in the bamboo forests on the lower slopes of the volcanoes. Tracking is generally shorter and less strenuous than a gorilla trek, and watching a troop leap through the bamboo, feeding and calling to one another, is a joyful contrast to the calm presence of the gorillas. It makes an ideal second activity.

The Dian Fossey Tomb Hike

In 1967, American primatologist Dian Fossey established the Karisoke Research Center in the saddle between Mount Karisimbi and Mount Bisoke. Her years of study, and her fierce defence of the gorillas against poaching, brought the plight of the species to the attention of the world. The hike to the site of her camp and her grave, buried beside many of the gorillas she studied, climbs steeply through forest and can be demanding. For many visitors, standing at her resting place is one of the most moving moments of the trip.

The Ellen DeGeneres Campus

In Kinigi, the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund's Ellen DeGeneres Campus continues the work Fossey began. The campus brings together gorilla research, conservation science, education and community programmes, with exhibits that explain how the mountain gorilla population has grown in recent decades. A visit before or after a trek gives fascinating context to what you see in the forest.

Climbing the Volcanoes

Active travellers can take on guided climbs within the park. Mount Bisoke rewards a steep ascent with a beautiful crater lake at its summit, while Mount Karisimbi, Rwanda's highest peak, is a serious two-day expedition at altitude. Both require good fitness and proper preparation, and permits and timings should be arranged in advance.

The Twin Lakes

Lakes Burera and Ruhondo, so beautiful from the lodge terrace, are just as rewarding up close. Depending on local arrangements, guests can walk down through the terraced hillsides, meet farmers working their fields, visit lakeside communities or explore the water by boat — a gentle, restorative way to spend a rest day between treks.

Rwandan Culture

Traditional music, the energetic intore dance and community-led initiatives offer an insight into daily life and heritage in northern Rwanda. These experiences can be arranged on request and scheduled around trekking days so they never feel rushed.

Conservation and Community

Virunga Lodge was founded on a simple belief: that tourism in remote places should benefit the people and wildlife who live there. Volcanoes Safaris has long been recognised as a pioneer of responsible eco-tourism in the region, and that philosophy runs through the way the lodge operates, from its solar-powered energy and hot water to its close relationships with neighbouring communities.

Conservation and Community

Virunga Lodge was founded on a simple belief: that tourism in remote places should benefit the people and wildlife who live there. Over the years its initiatives have included support for local schools, water access, livelihoods and projects that reduce pressure on the forest.

Some of this work sits just down the hill from the lodge. A crafts centre built for the Titwezimbere Women's Cooperative gives women from nearby Sunzu village a place to make and sell their work ask us about arranging a visit during your stay. Many of the lodge's own staff come from the surrounding communities, some of whom have been part of the Virunga Lodge story since it was first built.

The mountain gorilla is one of conservation's rare success stories. Once feared to be heading for extinction, its numbers have grown thanks to decades of protection, research, veterinary care and community engagement. A stay at Virunga Lodge, together with a gorilla permit, is part of that story: tourism revenue helps pay for rangers, supports the communities around the park and gives local people a stake in keeping the forest and its gorillas safe.

Why Discerning Travellers Choose Virunga Lodge

Northern Rwanda now has several exceptional luxury lodges, and travellers at this level often weigh them carefully. The newer, ultra-premium properties near Kinigi offer larger villas, contemporary design and a price point to match. Virunga Lodge offers something different.

It is the original the lodge that helped bring gorilla tourism back to Rwanda and it carries that heritage in its stonework, its Map Room and the long relationships between its team and the conservationists who protect the park. Its ridge-top position gives it a view no lodge at the park edge can share: lakes on one side, volcanoes on the other. And its warmth is personal rather than polished, with ten bandas, a single shared table and a butler who knows your name by the first evening. For travellers who value character, story and setting as highly as thread count, it remains one of the most rewarding places to stay in Rwanda, at a meaningfully lower rate than the newest lodges.

Recognition: Virunga Lodge won the Condé Nast Traveler Readers' Choice Award for Best Resorts in the Rest of Africa in 2022, and was voted into the top 15 resorts in Central and East Africa in the 2023 awards.

When to Go

Gorillas can be trekked all year round, and Virunga Lodge welcomes guests in every season. Because the lodge sits close to the equator, temperatures stay fairly steady through the year; what changes is the rain.

The long dry season, from June to September, is the most popular time to visit. Trails tend to be firmer, skies are often clearer, and it fits well with the great wildlife season in Tanzania and Kenya. These months fall in the lodge's high season, so permits and rooms should be booked well ahead. December to February brings another, shorter drier spell that is equally rewarding, especially for travellers combining Rwanda with other East African destinations over the festive period.

The long rains usually fall between March and May, with shorter rains around October and November. Trekking continues throughout, and the forest is at its most lush and green, though trails can be muddier and more demanding. These months fall in the lodge's low season, with significantly lower rates, and appeal to flexible travellers, photographers and those who prefer quieter trails. Whatever the month, mountain weather can change quickly, so waterproof layers are essential.

How Long to Stay

We recommend a minimum of two nights at Virunga Lodge. This allows you to arrive and settle in, trek the gorillas without rushing and still enjoy the lodge itself. A single night is possible on a carefully planned itinerary, but it leaves little margin for travel delays and makes the stay feel brief.

Three nights or more is ideal for anyone who wants to add golden monkey tracking, a volcano climb, the Dian Fossey hike or a second gorilla trek or who simply wants time on the terrace taking in the views. For honeymooners and travellers on a luxury safari, three nights strikes a lovely balance between adventure and relaxation.

What to Pack

A stay at Virunga Lodge combines cool highland evenings, forest trekking and relaxed lodge days, so it is worth packing for all three.

At the Lodge

<colgroup><col style="min-width: 25px;"><col style="min-width: 25px;"><col style="min-width: 25px;"></colgroup>

At the Lodge

Gorilla Trekking

Photography

Warm layers for evenings

Fleece or light down jacket

Comfortable smart-casual wear

Binoculars for the lake views

Reading for the fireside

Broken-in waterproof boots

Long trousers and gaiters

Long-sleeved shirt

Waterproof rain jacket

Gardening gloves

Small daypack and water

Mirrorless or DSLR body

70–200mm or 100–400mm lens

Wide lens for landscapes

Spare batteries and cards

Rain cover for your camera

Rates and What Is Included

Virunga Lodge publishes its rates per person per night, based on two people sharing a banda, with different prices for high and low season.
