Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge is built above it.

At around 2,100 metres on Nteko Ridge, in the Nkuringo sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, the lodge looks out over a sea of ancient rainforest. To one side the canopy falls away into deep green valleys; to the other, the land opens towards the Western Rift Valley and the chain of the Virunga Volcanoes on the borders of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is often described as Uganda's highest lodge, and on clear mornings, when the cloud lies below you in the valleys, the name makes perfect sense.

Clouds was created by WildPlaces Africa in partnership with the African Wildlife Foundation and the people of Nkuringo, who hold a significant stake in the venture. It was conceived as a way of making the mountain gorilla's forest more valuable protected than cleared, and that purpose still runs through it: eight volcanic-stone cottages, a personal butler for every guest, open fires against the mountain chill, and a trailhead so close that guests set out to meet the gorillas on foot.

"Most gorilla journeys begin with a drive in the dark. At Clouds, they begin at your cottage door."

<colgroup><col style="width: 189px;"><col style="width: 159px;"><col style="width: 162px;"><col style="min-width: 25px;"></colgroup>

2,100m

Altitude on Nteko Ridge

8

Stone Cottages 6 Cottages, 2 Family

On Foot

To the Nkuringo Gorilla Trailhead

24 hr

Personal Butler for Every Guest

For travellers planning a luxury Uganda gorilla safari, Clouds offers something rare: a lodge of real comfort and character in one of Bwindi's quietest and most dramatic corners. Bwindi itself is one of Africa's oldest rainforests, a steep, folded landscape of hardwoods, tree ferns and tangled vines that is home to almost half of the world's mountain gorillas. From the lodge veranda, the view runs across the forest canopy to the golden grasslands of the Rift Valley and on to the volcanoes of the Virunga massif.

The altitude defines the mood of the place. Mornings are cool and often misty, with cloud lying in the valleys below the ridge. Days can be bright and warm, and evenings turn cold enough that the fires are lit every night of the year. It is a climate made for wool blankets, deep armchairs and a glass of something warming as the light fades over the mountains.

Arriving at the Lodge

Nkuringo is remote, and that remoteness is part of its appeal. The most comfortable way to arrive is by air: a scheduled or private flight from Entebbe to the airstrip at Kisoro, followed by a scenic road transfer up into the hills to the lodge. The drive climbs past lakes, terraced farms and villages, with the volcanoes rising behind you.

Clouds also sits within reach of Rwanda. Many travellers fly into Kigali, cross the border at Cyanika and drive on to Nkuringo, a route that makes it easy to combine gorilla trekking in both countries. A road journey from Entebbe or Kampala is possible too, but it takes a full day and is best broken with stays in Queen Elizabeth National Park or Lake Bunyonyi.

However you travel, the journey is handled from the moment you land. We arrange a personal meet-and-assist welcome on arrival, domestic flights where they make sense, a private vehicle and experienced driver-guide, and timings built around your permits, so the long distances of southwestern Uganda feel effortless.

The roads into Nkuringo are winding and can be slow after rain. We recommend arriving the afternoon before your trek, and flying into Kisoro or Kigali rather than driving the full distance from Entebbe in one day.

Inside the Cottages

The eight cottages are built from dark volcanic stone and set among the lodge's gardens on the ridge. Inside, they feel more like a private mountain home than a hotel room. Each has a bedroom and a separate sitting room, joined by an open fireplace, an en-suite bathroom with double basins, and a veranda facing the forest or the mountains. Turned wood, soft furnishings and works by Ugandan artists give every room warmth and a sense of place.

<colgroup><col style="min-width: 25px;"><col style="min-width: 25px;"></colgroup>

One-Bedroom Cottages

Two-Bedroom Family Cottages

Six cottages are designed for couples and individual travellers. A king or twin bedroom opens onto a spacious sitting room, with the fire between them and a private veranda beyond. After a hard day on Nkuringo's slopes, having a room to sit in, rather than simply a bed, makes a real difference.

Two family cottages each have two en-suite bedrooms around a shared living space and fireplace, and sleep up to four adults. They suit families, friends travelling together and small groups who want to share an evening fire while keeping their own rooms.

Whichever cottage you choose, the small things are taken care of: a fire lit before you return, tea brought to the veranda, and a bed that, in at least one cottage, looks straight out at the Virunga Volcanoes turning pink at dawn. Cottage configurations and occupancy should be confirmed for your travel dates.

Life at the Lodge

On arrival, every guest is introduced to their personal butler, who looks after them throughout the stay, at any hour. It is the butler who wakes you with coffee on trekking mornings, packs your lunch, arranges your massage and remembers how you take your evening drink. With only eight cottages, the service is personal in a way that larger lodges cannot match.

Dining

Meals are prepared from fresh local produce and served in the main lodge, a large stone building warmed by several fireplaces, with a dining room, lounge and bar opening onto a sheltered veranda. Dinner can also be arranged privately in your cottage. The rate is full board and includes house drinks, so wine with dinner and a drink by the fire are part of the stay; premium brands are charged separately.

Rest and Restoration

Nkuringo's trails are among the most demanding in Bwindi, and the lodge is set up to help you recover. A massage is included with every stay of two nights or more: one 45-minute treatment for two nights, and two for three nights. Laundry is also included, so muddy trekking clothes can be returned clean and ready for the next outing.

Evenings

As darkness falls over the forest, the fires are lit and guests gather in the lounge or the library, filled with books on Africa, its wildlife and its exploration. Others prefer the veranda, watching the last light leave the volcanoes. Dinner follows, and conversation tends to return to the gorillas: who saw the silverback, how steep the climb was, and how quickly the hour passed.

Amenities and Services

Clouds is a remote mountain lodge, and its luxury lies in space, warmth, privacy and service rather than resort facilities. At Clouds, that day begins differently from almost anywhere else in Bwindi. Here is how it usually unfolds.

<colgroup><col style="min-width: 25px;"></colgroup>

Gorilla Trekking Day From Clouds

Early Morning

Coffee by the fire and a short walk Your butler brings coffee to the cottage and

breakfast is served in the main lodge. There is no long drive to the trailhead: guests walk from the lodge to the Nkuringo starting point, often with the forest still wrapped in mist below.

Briefing

Meeting the rangers Uganda Wildlife Authority guides brief each group of up to eight trekkers on the gorilla family they will visit and on how to behave in its presence. Trackers will already be in the forest, following the family's trail from where they nested the night before.

The Forest

Down into the Impenetrable Nkuringo is known for steep terrain. Trails drop from the ridge into deep valleys of dense forest, and the return climb can be demanding. Treks can last from a couple of hours to most of the day, depending on where the gorillas are. Local porters can be hired at the trailhead to carry your bag and lend a steady hand on the slopes.

The Hour

The encounter When the trackers find the family, the group moves forward quietly. Then they are there: a silverback feeding in the undergrowth, mothers with infants clinging to their backs, juveniles wrestling among the vines. Visitors spend one hour with the family. It passes in what feels like minutes.

Afternoon

Back to the ridge After the climb out, the lodge is close at hand. A hot shower, a late lunch on the veranda, an included massage, and an evening by the fire bring the day gently to a close.

Gorilla permits are limited, and staying at Clouds does not secure one automatically. Permits must be booked in advance for the correct sector and date. Uganda Wildlife Authority currently charges foreign non-residents US$800 per permit, reduced to US$600 in April, May and November. The minimum age for gorilla trekking is 15 years.

Trekking at Your Own Pace

It is worth being honest: Nkuringo is the most physically demanding of Bwindi's trekking sectors. Trails descend steeply from the ridge, and every step down must be climbed again on the way back. Plenty of travellers in their sixties and seventies complete the trek successfully, but good preparation matters. Regular walking in the months before you travel, especially uphill, will make the day far more enjoyable.

On the morning of the trek, your guide will speak with the rangers about your fitness and preferences. Rangers allocate the gorilla families, but they take these conversations seriously. A porter, a walking stick and an unhurried pace make a great difference. For guests who would prefer gentler terrain, we can plan the trek in the neighbouring Rushaga sector, reached by road from the lodge.

For guests with limited mobility, porters can carry visitors to and from the gorillas in a specially designed carrying chair, for an additional fee. Availability is limited, so please tell us at the time of booking and we will make the arrangements.

Beyond the Gorillas

Clouds rewards a longer stay. The forest, the ridge and the communities around Nkuringo offer a depth of experience well beyond a single trek.

The Gorilla Habituation Experience

In the nearby Rushaga sector, a small number of travellers each day can join researchers and trackers as they work with a gorilla family that is still becoming accustomed to people. The habituation experience allows up to four hours with the gorillas rather than one, and offers a rare insight into how the families are studied and protected. It requires its own permit, currently US$1,500 per person, which should be confirmed and booked well in advance.

Forest Walks

Guided walks along the forest edge and into the valleys reveal another side of Bwindi: giant tree ferns, orchids, butterflies and the calls of forest monkeys. They are a gentle way to spend a rest day and an introduction to one of the most biodiverse forests in Africa.

Birdwatching

Bwindi is one of Africa's great birding destinations, with many species found only in the Albertine Rift. Guided birding walks can be arranged for keen birders and photographers, with fees confirmed in advance.

The Batwa

The Batwa are the forest's original inhabitants, who lived as hunter-gatherers in Bwindi for generations before the park was created. Time with a Batwa community offers a moving insight into their traditional knowledge and into how conservation has changed their lives. The lodge's community activities, including Batwa visits, are included in the rate.

Nkuringo Village

A walk through the villages of Nkuringo shows the human side of gorilla conservation: schools, farms and community projects that benefit directly from the lodge. It is a rewarding counterpoint to the forest and a chance to meet the people whose partnership created Clouds.

Conservation and Community

Clouds was built with a clear purpose. The land around Nkuringo borders some of the most important gorilla habitat on earth, and the lodge was created by WildPlaces Africa, the African Wildlife Foundation and the Nkuringo community to show that a protected forest could bring lasting benefits to the people who live beside it.

<colgroup><col style="width: 272px;"><col style="width: 224px;"><col style="min-width: 25px;"></colgroup>

Conservation

A US$25 nightly fee per guest supports the WildPlaces Conservation Foundation

Community

The Nkuringo community holds a significant stake in the lodge and benefits from every stay

Tourism

Permits, porters and lodge jobs give families a direct reason to protect the forest

Every stay contributes through the lodge's community partnership and the conservation fee. The lodge also supports local schools through a gardening programme that teaches nutrition and grows food. Bwindi's mountain gorilla population has grown in recent decades, and lodges built on partnerships like this one are a large part of the reason.

Why Discerning Travellers Choose Clouds

Bwindi has several fine lodges, most of them clustered around the busier Buhoma sector in the north or the Rushaga area in the south. Clouds is different in three ways that matter to travellers at this level.

The first is its position. Few lodges in Bwindi let you walk from your room to the start of the trek, and none has a view quite like this, across the forest to the volcanoes of three countries.

The second is its scale and service. Eight cottages, a fire in every one and a personal butler for every guest create a private, unhurried atmosphere. The third is its story. Clouds was built with the Nkuringo community, not simply beside it, and guests feel that connection in the people who look after them. For travellers who want comfort and character in one of Africa's wildest settings, it remains one of the most rewarding places to stay in Uganda.

When to Go

Gorillas can be trekked all year round, and Clouds is open in every season. Uganda sits on the equator, so temperatures stay fairly steady; what changes is the rain.

The drier months, from June to September and from December to February, are the most popular. Trails are firmer, though never truly dry in a rainforest, and these months fit well with safaris in Queen Elizabeth National Park, Kenya and Tanzania. They are the lodge's high season, so cottages and permits should be booked well ahead.

The rains usually fall from March to May and again in October and November. The forest is at its most lush and trekking continues, though the steep Nkuringo trails can be muddy and slippery. These are the lodge's green-season months, with considerably lower rates, and in April, May and November the gorilla permit price is also reduced. Whatever the month, waterproof layers are essential.

How Long to Stay

We recommend a minimum of two nights at Clouds. The journey to Nkuringo is long, and two nights allow you to arrive, trek without rushing and enjoy the lodge. Two nights also bring one included massage, which most trekkers are glad of.

Three nights or more is ideal for adding the habituation experience, a second trek, birding or time with the Batwa, or simply a day by the fire looking out over the forest. For honeymooners and travellers on a luxury safari, three nights strikes the right balance, and includes two massages.

Rates and What Is Included

Clouds publishes its rates per person per night, with a green season and a high season.
