Mirima Kibale Lodge

Lodge overview

Mirima Kibale Lodge | A Luxury Lodge in a Forest Full of Chimpanzees.

Perched on a quiet lakeside ridge in western Uganda, Mirima is a small lodge made for travelers who would rather slow down than rush through. Here, a few unhurried days mean waking to birdsong, watching the light settle over the water, and heading into the forest when you’re ready.

And what a forest it is. Mirima sits close to Kibale National Park, home to some of Uganda’s most celebrated wildlife encounters: the chimpanzees. Our guests are about twenty minutes away from the park, so your morning chimp walk begins with a short, easy journey rather than a long, tiring drive.

Since 1993, the Kanyanchu chimpanzee community has been carefully monitored and habituated to human presence, which makes sightings far more likely. With a success rate of over 90%, most visitors leave having stood beneath the trees, watching these remarkably intelligent primates go about their day in the wild. It is the kind of moment people talk about long after they’ve gone home.

Come for the chimps, stay for the stillness. We’d love to host you at Mirima.

"The chimpanzees may be what brings you here. Chances are they weren’t the busiest ones. They were the days with a good adventure in the morning, a lazy stretch in the middle, and an evening that drifted on without anyone glancing at a watch. That is the rhythm Mirima is built around.

The lodge sits on a wooded ridge in Kabarole District, right where water, farmland and forest meet. Directly below lies Lake Nyamirima, with Lakes Nyinabulitwa and Nyinabikere completing a necklace of crater lakes in the distance. Tea plantations ripple across the surrounding hills, and the dark canopy of Kibale Forest National Park rises along the skyline, just beyond the lodge boundary. The view never stays the same for long, shifting with every hour of light.

Kibale is Uganda’s best known place to meet chimpanzees on foot, set in one of the country’s richest primate forests, and the walk into it is the headline of any stay here. But what lifts Mirima above a simple overnight stop is the countryside around it. Crater lakes, tea slopes, small villages and wetland edges give the area a character all its own, and it is these quieter surroundings that so often persuade guests to stay an extra night or two.Mirima is part of the Nkuringo Eco Collection, a Ugandan owned group led by women.

Getting There

<colgroup><col style="min-width: 25px;"></colgroup>

By road from Entebbe: The lodge can arrange vehicle transfers, though these are priced separately from the room rate.

From Bwindi or Queen Elizabeth National Park: The lodge was conceived as a natural follow-on from Bwindi, so it slots neatly between gorilla trekking and savannah game drives.

From Kigali: Road transfers from Kigali are also available, which suits combined Rwanda and Uganda trips.

Architecture and Design

Mirima Kibale Lodge was built with Local crafts like timber and stone, which are locally sourced the whole place a rooted, western Ugandan feel. The look is simple and modern, with warm wood, honest stonework and plenty of glass to pull the landscape inside.

Every cottage stands on its own. You won't share a walkway or a wall with a neighbor, so the lake view belongs entirely to you. Wide windows let the changing light travel across the room through the day. Fireplaces and large timber framed windows feature in the suites, so even a misty, cool evening feels cosy.

The shared spaces follow the same approach.

Ziwa, the restaurant, has a soaring timber ceiling and walls of glass, with a broad deck stretching out above the infinity pool towards the lake, the gardens and the forest edge. It is a dining room made for gazing, and breakfasts here rarely end on schedule.

Climb to the top of the property and you find the bar. Kyanda occupies the highest spot on the grounds, with an uninterrupted outlook across the crater lake. It is the natural place to watch the day end.

The practical side is handled quietly. Solar panels supply the power with a generator as backup, and the whole property is fenced and guarded around the clock. It all looks easy because the planning was careful.

The Rooms | What You Actually Get

Each room is its own freestanding cottage, set among the trees. After breakfast, a drive of roughly twenty minutes brings you to Kanyanchu, where rangers brief the group before you set off on foot into the forest.

At first, you mostly listen. Branches shift in the canopy, a distant call rings out, and your guide interprets the forest, pausing, then speeding up. Chimps seldom stay in one place for long; they feed, call out, groom one another, squabble and disappear, often in the space of a few minutes.

Then, abruptly, they are there. One swings between branches, another sits just long enough to meet your eye. The mood is energetic and unpredictable, a world away from the calm of a gorilla family. The standard trek allows up to an hour with the chimpanzees once located.
